Alt text

Alt text finds images on your website without alt text and writes a suggestion for each one, in the tone of your brand.

On this page

Alt text finds images on your website without alt text and writes a suggestion for each one, in the tone of your brand. Alt text helps findability and accessibility.

1. Before you start

The business needs a website address in its settings.
Set your brand's audience and tone, so the suggestions match. See Tone of voice and brand book.

2. Find images without alt text

  1. Open the Actions tab of a business and click Alt text.
  2. Click Find images without alt text. This costs 2 credits, only when images without alt text are found. See Credits.
  3. Wait until the list appears. This can take a minute.

To run it again later, click Search again. This costs 2 credits again when images are found.

3. How images are found

  • Metrara checks up to 20 pages of your site. It uses the pages it already knows for the business, otherwise your sitemap, otherwise only the homepage.
  • On a multilingual site, only pages in the language of the business are checked.
  • An image counts as missing alt text when the alt attribute is absent or empty.
  • The same image on several pages, such as a logo, is listed once.
  • Up to 30 images are listed per search.

4. How the suggestions are written

The AI does not see the image itself. It uses the file name, the page title, the nearest heading and the text around the image. When the file name says little, the suggestion stays general instead of inventing details. Suggestions are short, at most about 100 characters.

5. Read the results

At the top you see how many images were found and on how many pages. Each row shows:

  • a thumbnail and the suggested alt text;
  • Image: the file name, which opens the image;
  • Page: the page where the image was found.

If every image already has alt text, you see a message with the number of pages checked.

6. Add the alt text to your website

Metrara does not change your website. You add the text yourself.

  1. Check whether the suggestion matches the image.
  2. Click Copy next to the suggestion.
  3. In WordPress, open the image in the media library and paste the text into the alt text field.
  4. Save the image.

7. Good to know

Client users can use this action only when the agency has turned on Client may run actions for their business in Manage.
Pages that block Metrara or respond too slowly are skipped.
